First real drum about 7 years old
First formal lessons about 8 years old
First Pipe Band lesson about 12 years old August 1976
Still learning!
(2) What made you start?
Always liked music. Having two older sisters I was subjected to some of the best music of the 60's and 70's and inherited some great records (7" round black turned at 45 rpm - old school).
But always watched or listened to the drums or rythm much more interested in playing these rythms than singing the words.
(3) What are your greatest influences on life?
Big Question - obviously music has played a great part in all my life, the friendship that musicains have is great. But my life in a small country town in Scotland has given me a great level and honest upbringing, also my time living in London and playing some diverse music and a lot of travel all over the world has opened my eyes to many things and have all contributed and influenced who I am.
(4) What music do you listen to, other than piping music?
Many styles lately Salsa and love old school progressive rock ie. Genesis, Rush, Supertramp, Toto, Roxy Music, Lead Zep., Pink Foyd and like to chill out with James Taylor, Neill Young and John Waite but can listen to many other styles - especially if its got a good DRUM.
(5) Do you play any other musical instruments?
Only percussion, in general if you hit it, i can play it. Did play tuned percussion at school and county orchestra level but used to cheat and remember the notes - never took to all those notes 'n' stuff.
(6) Funniest time in your drumming / piping experiences was....?
Had a lot, most of which I can't tell to a juvenile pipe band or on the web, but, will never forget my first mini-tour when we set the back seat of the car alight on the way to Lancaster or fell of the drum riser at "New Merlins Cave" - London or....or....or....or'....and all of our trip to Dubia with the rock 'n' roll band most of which we just laughed and laughed to pass the time. laying in a band can be very boring if you haven't got a sense of homour or someone in the band hasn't !
(7) What is your most favourite possession?
Odd question? Charmaine's not a possession, so it must be by own drum kit - TAMA Starclasic Maple, with Chestnut Fade 10,12,14,16,18, with 22 Base drum, brass snare, all the buzzers and bells only 5 kits like in the UK less than 100 worlwide - GEORGOUS - still kiss it every time I use it.
(8) Do you have a best comedian or act?
Like to watch most "live" music, among the best Genesis 1980 Carlisle and 1982 Mk bowl, U2 at Gateshead supporting The Police and Recently James Taylor about 2005. Comedians - I've seen Billy Connelly several times as well as played with him years ago and would love to see Al Murray Live.
(9) Do you wear lucky underwear when playing in your kilt?
No
(10) Finally, if you could have a super power, what would it be?
Easy ! Super power to see into the future win the lottery and pay for the next America trip, uniforms, etc. would use it only once - honest
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about or say???
Once again it gives me great pleasure to teach some great drummers along with many lovely pipers and even when its really hard work and very busy I am delighted to pay back what I have learned and I hope you all go on to enjoy your musical carreer's half as much as I have, then I will have enjoyed it twice as much as you have.
Regards
MICHAEL LINDSAY
